Relocating to a new town can be stressful, especially when you have a family. You want to make the best decisions you can for your children to ensure they have a happy life and a good future. And that starts with a quality education. If you’re planning on relocating to Reno, you can rest assured knowing your little loved ones have some pretty amazing opportunities when it comes to their education. Here’s why:
A study done in 2016 by US News & World Report shows that out of 28,000 ranked public high schools across the U.S., fifteen Nevadan schools made the top 10%. Not to mention that two Reno public high schools took the first and second spots as the best schools in all of Nevada. Education is not a concern if you are relocating to Reno.
In Reno, Nevada, our students have unique opportunities that aren’t available in other parts of the state. Here’s just a few of them:
The IB Programme
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is available at two of our Nevada public schools – Vaughn Middle School and Wooster High School. Each school must be accredited and authorized by the IB, then they become IB World Schools. The IB Programme is an international program that focuses on teaching students to think critically and independently, and how to acquire with care and logic. They aim to go above and beyond the normal curriculum to develop knowledgeable and inquiring young people who strive to succeed.
The IB Programme has many advantages for students who participate in the program such as:
- Encouraging students to challenge assumptions and think critically.
- Encourages students to consider local and global contexts.
- Is independently developed from the government and national systems which allows them to incorporate quality practices from research and their global community of schools.
The IB Programme has developed challenging programs of international education and a rigorous set of assessments. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and life-long learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Improvements Are Being Made
According to an article by CarsonNow.org, an evaluation of the Nevada education program has been earning positive results. It recommended that continued funding of all 7 categorical education programs will be a major priority of the county. This statement recognizes that in order for our education to improve, we need to add more funding to some essential programs. With the proper steps being taken to support specific programs, students, family, and educators will all start to benefit from the changes. Reno realizes how important the school system is, and is continually working to improve it.
